Chicken problems

Post by daveiron on Thu Mar 08, 2018 1:01 pm

Off & on for most of my life I have kept a few chickens. At present I have two ,unfortunately They have started eating the eggs,

I have not had this problem for decades & previously solved it by filling an egg with mustard. I tried this today and they eat it without problems .
I then filled another with some very hot chilli that I have grown mixed with hot chili powder. They have now eaten that with no effect.

Any suggestions please as I dont want to kill them as my grandchildren like to see them, but they have got to pay their way.

Lack of protein in a hen's diet can make her more inclined to break and eat eggs. Or you could try roll-away nesting boxes. When the hen lays an egg, the egg rolls out of the nesting box and the hen can't reach it.

Making the nest boxes darker can help, also anything that can be done to reduce chance of damage. Collect the eggs as soon as possible as well. It's possible to rig fancy nest boxes where eggs roll away out of reach, but we've never needed to go that far so don't have first hand experience.

It could be like MikeThomas suggests a deficiency. They sometimes eat their own feathers for the same reason.

I have never experienced this with my girls. I give them a grit/oyster shell mix. The grit helps reduce food costs and the oyster shell for a supplement.

This site has some tips on the topic :
