Potato Chitting & Planting

Step 1,

When you get some spuds let a couple grow little nobles and then cut these spud's in half. Push a toothpick through the half a spud and place this on a glass of water in a warm light place, after a period of time (2/3 weeks) roots will sprout from the spud and head for the water. You can use seed potato’s if you wish but it is more cost effective to just use a couple of shop brought spuds.

Step 2,

Get a suitable bag to hold your spuds in for growing. I have used potato grow bag's in this example that I picked up at the end of season last year for about 10 pence for 2 but anything will do such as a couple of black bags/carrier bags etc. Just make sure you can roll it up as you add more soil during the growing period.

Step 3,

Place some soil (see here for how I process the soil that I use https://goodf.forumotion.com/t1896-planting-onions-radish-tomatoes ) in the bottom of your grow bag and add your spud that you have started on your glass of water. Cover the spud with a layer of soil and give it a soak of water. Preferably use rain water, if this is not an option then use tap water but let it sit for 12 hours prior to vent of the chemicals that are added. Place the bag in as much sunlight as you can.

Step 4,

As the spud's grow you will notice green leaves poking up out of the top of the soil. When these show cover them with additional soil and roll the bag up as required until you get to the top of the bag. At this point you can just leave the plant to grow on top until you are ready to harvest. Feel the soil every couple of days to check that there is moisture in it, if not then add some water.
