The Kol Nidre

Post by toolapcblack on Fri Jul 21, 2017 2:02 pm

Came cross this while doing some research, which I found very interesting indeed and explains a lot to me!!!

Kol Nidre is an Aramaic declaration; Dry legal formula to musical accompaniment.
The formula proactively annuls any personal or religious oaths or prohibitions made upon oneself for the next year

"All vows we are likely to make, all oaths and pledges we are likely to take between this Yom Kippur(Day/Date of Atonement- tenth day of the seventh month) and the next Yom Kippur, we publicly renounce. Let them all be relinquished and abandoned, null and void, neither firm nor established. Let our vows, pledges and oaths be considered neither vows nor pledges nor oaths."

yes seems to be a vow to their god, either way if you had them under oath somewhere maybe on the stand this declaration would annul it...wouldn't it?

I am not convinced it would if they were under oath to their god.

I believe it used to be used when people were forced to change religion so they would outwardly be 'Christian' but inwardly they would still be Jewish and this doesn't really happen anymore apart from a few places but not to Jew's as far as I am aware.

Nowadays I believe they still use it as outwardly, whilst being allowed to say they are Jewish they are not outwardly living in harmony with Judaism so it is more a repentance of those perceived sins.
