First you will need to establish who's mistake caused this overpayment.
I would contact them to ask how & why .Request a copy of the form you filled in to apply for the benefit.
Check that the info you gave them is 100% correct. And then get back to us .

Here is a link you should find helpful.

Thanks. Thinking back, because this was back in 2015. I may of not informed them that I started working. It may be that. I've just jotted a quick letter asking for information. So I'll see what they say. But if I'm in the wrong it may just be better for me to arrange repayment. Thanks for your reply

Plenty of info there for you to have a gander at Alfie ... bear in mind you have to prove you had gave the Council notice your circumstances changed etc.. , many people do submit forms to that effect and then destroy the evidence they did so, the councils have a special policy of taking advantage of that fact, 12 months later or so you will receive information of an overpayment, this creates a receivables set-off for the council and it hides poor performance on their books.

They tried it with me many years ago, for council tax I had already paid for; big mistake because I kept all my payment receipts and postage etc

The appeal tribunal is your remedy, the council will probably ignore you in the mean time, so you should send them notices to record their unconscionable behaviour.

Overpayment notice Empty Re: Overpayment notice

I am with Candor on this one, councils and the DWP have been guilty of deliberately generating scenarios to claim people have been overpaid and the main one is that they have claimed they haven't received written correspondence when it has been sent and delivered, and they claim they haven't received it.
Some of the worst cases usually involve people posting it through their letterboxes in their building and the council claiming it is still not received, and in a number of cases people posting such correspondence have video of themselves posting the letter usually taken on a phone, and this is a tactic they use by delaying such actions as very few people keep such video on their phones for so long.

In many cases councils and the DWP have security cameras which actually show people posting documents, and they only keep video for one year then destroy it, this is why they wait for over a year before making such claims against someone.
