Re: Processed meats or cigarettes – which gives you cancer more quickly?
Hey Epsom
I've become quite passionate about this kind of stuff, but am having to apply my time elsewhere at the minute, it was refreshing to read. Ive been on a plant based diet for 4 years nearly, even managed to talk a couple of friends into it, it is solid information to share with the carnivors, if they can hear me above the box!
On all seriousness, how the hell do we have this stuff on every supermarket shelf ready for 5 year olds to throw down their throat, imagine if you saw a 5 year old walking down the street smoking, perhaps if everyone viewed a hot dog as a cigarette, there wouldn't be much of a market for it!

Re: Processed meats or cigarettes – which gives you cancer more quickly?
And here is the problem, the Government and their media stooges ramming out the same continual messages to suit the agenda of whatever is on vogue at the time to fit the Governments agenda.
Several years ago I was privvy to a document being circulated among senior members of the NHS which actually showed that smoking a pipe or cigarette of raw tobacco had no effects at all, and it was additives in manufactured cigarettes which caused the problems and they were there to maintain the shape of cigarettes and preserve the tobacco. This document was buried and forgotten as the alleged experts didn't want people to identify the issues as Government were rolling them all into one to help promote the anti smoking message. Governments around the world didn't want people knowing smoking raw tobacco was safe and that pipe tobacco is raw tobacco, so why didn't they change the legislation to remove many of the additives in manufactured tobacco as they do exist and are much safer.

terms like "ranked alongside" , tells us absolutely nothing and is used as fear-mongering . What is the ranking system used ? We should all beware these types of articles because they are written by someone with an agenda.
"processed and salty meats ranked alongside cigarettes as cause of cancer" How are the ranks organised?
in a study that ranks any slight increase in cases together with extremely large increase in cases for the sake of some political or financial motive???
http://monographs.iarc.fr/ENG/Classification/latest_classif.php you try and figure it out , this is the cancer research classification system i believe the article is using.

Re: Processed meats or cigarettes – which gives you cancer more quickly?
i totally agree that the info can be warped esp for financial or political agendas, but in this case I believe they need to be seen doing something about it. It was only 50 years ago or so there were tv adverts of doctors pushing cigarettes. Now they are on the brink of being taken off the shelves.
The animal ag industry is devestatig in so many ways, I believe there is enough factual information and people pushing it for the right reasons to drive a change. The whole world should be on a plant based diet, at the moment about 90% of westerners think they are Carnivors

Let me ask a simple question.
If it is the additives they add to tobacco, and the aditives they add to processed meat which cause the problems, they why not remove the additives.

The additives are a big problem, but how the meat and dairy is produced is also a v.big problem. The animals are fed corn, they are constantly injected with hormones, antibiotics, they are beaten, caged, raped, they have there children taken and they are slaughtered in some of the most horrific circumstances. They are severely nutrient deficient, full of hormones, antibiotics, stress, fear and adrenaline before they die. Then we eat them!
The additives are bad, but theres other stuff that contributes to disease.
I shall return a question. Lets say they took the additives out of processed meat, but the animal was severely nutrient deficient, sick, stressed, caged all its life deprived of exercise, fresh air, companionship, it was beaten and torchered, pumped full of hormones and antibiotics just to keep the animal alive until it matures enough to be slaughtered, would this animal be healthy and safe to eat?

Re: Processed meats or cigarettes – which gives you cancer more quickly?
very true, there are questionable practices but the same goes for fruit and vege too.
https://agrinfobank.wordpress.com/2013/05/30/plant-hormones/
chemical fertilizer
Gmo's
pesicides
fungicides
irradiation
bleaching
etc etc etc
(and i hear some youtube vegans promoting not washing vege before you eat it, now you have to question the sensibility here,agenda?21?)
i think what we can learn is that any food is better if you DIY . Whatever your choice.

Yep you've made a good point here, DIY all the way, some of the fruit and veg practices are very questionable
The name for this wrestling move wasn't plucked out of thin air

The DDT insecticide was most likely responsible for the 'polio outbreak', they made serious mistakes in the past, they will still be making them today.
From my research everything points to processed and red meat (also other processed foods) that are leading causes of disease, and yes plant based practices have their own story, but the accumulative damage the animal ag industry is having on the plane't, particularly in western based cultures, is environmentally, ethically and from a health view almost undeniably at the top of the list.

Re: Processed meats or cigarettes – which gives you cancer more quickly?
Removing the additives would be a great beginning and this would reduce the cumulative effect, and I for one support this, and as for the animals fed on various GM grasses and then topped up with chemically infested feeds, they would be a natural progression.
