house rental question Empty house rental question

Post by scrwm Wed Jun 05, 2019 3:21 pm

My rental expires on Sunday, the house house we wanted to move into cancelled yesterday and now we need a new place.
The agent we rent from has already done their end (termination) of lease notice of course which they are obliged to do.
In case I cannot get into a new place next week, what are my options...

- beg the current landlord for more time, we can pay him for another few weeks or to the end of June. he is all planned to move in on Sunday!

- pack up and live in the car / hotel?

my heads literally spinning right now and my missus is in tears.
what a mess.

first thing i would do is explain the new situation to your current landlord and see if they will keep you there on a month by month basis or something till you find somewhere else.

Agree. Preferably talk to the landlord, not to their agent.   There's a reasonable chance they don't have another tenant moving in right away.   I hesitate to add, but assuming you're in the UK the landlord can't actually force you out without jumping through a few more hoops which all takes time.   You could also talk to the council housing department to see if they can offer emergency accommodation if the worst comes to the worst.

You could also look at a week by week basis with the landlord for a fixed period or until the property is rented out again.

@handle thanks, yes we have a deposit certificate. Very helpful post Smile
@assasin, am I glad you are still around i love your posts. Like you said we were very lucky to agree a one weeks extension, granted this morning. I am sure we can get sorted in the time he offered us. Otherwise we add one more week.
