A virus is a standalone organism (or thing let's say).  Basically it contains either DNA or RNA, a couple of bits of protein and that's it.  All it can do is reproduce, it can't metabolise so it needs a host cell to do the work.   You could think of it as comprising just the blueprint for how to reproduce itself, plus some bits and pieces that trick the host cell into reproducing virus copies flat out.

Thanks. Which particular bit are you looking at? I may have misinterpreted your post, but you seemed to be citing a theory that viruses are created when a cell is attacked by something other than a virus. That's not a theory that I've seen proposed, although if you're referring to their original evolution millions of years ago then I suppose that's anyone's guess.

After all I've seen in the last few years i tend to try and take nothing for granted. i have heard cancer is a virus and cancer can be caused by triggers...it would not suprise me if viruses have been made out to be something they're not (perhaps accidentally once but some bright spark thought, hey, we can scare people with this) perfect tool in their armoury
daveiron posted this a little while back, it's what got me thinking about what actually is a virus? Fascinating

There are some forms of cancer that can be triggered by viruses, that's well enough established for the name "oncovirus" to be coined for the viruses.  I don't believe it's a complete explanation yet.  If you consider that cancer is cellular reproduction going off the rails it's really a symptom rather than a disease so it's quite possible that there are many different triggers.

You're right there ff, cells reproducing in an off-the-rails manner is a symptom.
So fair to say cancer is caused by a trigger. i have read that with most cancers there is a specific parasitic worm present.
Then the virtus...is a cause? Symptom? Or both?
