The end game has started
As has been predicted by many recently ,we are now moving into the end game.
Yesterday I received an email from my bank with a notification that I must now download an app
to a smart device for mobile banking to continue to use online banking.
They state its a new regulation ,so I guess it will now apply to all banks.
Its clear the next move will be cashless followed by a social crediting system.
I have a smart phone but its never been connected to the internet as I only use it as a phone
& camera. Coincindentally I ordered a Nokia 3310 earlier this week in order to bin my smart phone.
I am now left with a problem regarding banking . The only practical way I can think of at the moment
is to comply but only ever turn it on for banking.
Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated .

Re: The end game has started
Hi handel,
Yes that was partly my concern ,the way it was worded was there no option .If you want online
then you must do this.
My present thinking is to only use a dedicated phone for this & only turn it on for online banking.
I do not use or want mobile banking, everything is done from my home PC.

I realise that mate, but as we now deal with companies that are not local I need banking to make payments.
Cheques are almost a thing of the past or at least soon will be as will bank branches,so we all need online banking & as it appears all banks will be operating this change ,as far as I can see using a dedicated smart phone is going to be the only way .
I recon that way I can turn it off at all times except to access online banking .Thus they cannot track me as it will only be used when I am at my PC.
Looking for options ,so far this is all I can think of.

Was wondering that, remove battery as well ? Or turn off and wrap in tin foil ?
In any event it will not be going anywhere.

Re: The end game has started
If the phone is just for the banking app, leave it at home next to the PC. Could be a second hand phone off Ebay and no need for a SIM. Tape over the camera lens if you're concerned.
Regarding concern about whether the phone is really Off when switched off, then you could check on your wireless AP or router to see if there's any activity. If it's not associated with your AP, and no SIM installed it can't be sending or receiving anything.
Or change to a bank that doesn't require this. For example Lloyds verifies by phoning a and asking you to key in the code displayed on the screen. This verification is only needed for setting up new payees and maybe some other significant changes, not for routine access.

Thanks for that FF , I do have other phones . What concerned me was the bank stated these were new regulations .If that is the case there is no point in changing . I think I need to check that out.

Re: The end game has started
Looks like you're quite correct, I have found a few references to new regulations. They don't seem to mandate use of a smart phone exclusively, so I still think that's the bank's choice. And apparently it's going to apply to online purchases as well.
The underlying regulation appears to be the "EU Payments Services Directive".
