Difference between network operators and energy suppliers
Did you know there is a difference?
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/energy-advice-households/finding-your-energy-supplier-or-network-operator
Difference between network operators and energy suppliers. Network operators are different from energy suppliers. They own and run the pipes and wires that carry gas and electricity.
There are two types:
1. Transmission network operators. They own and run the high pressure and voltage network transporting energy across the country from where it is made.
2. Distribution network operators. They own and run the local ‘distribution’ network. They bring energy to homes and businesses at lower pressure and voltages from the transmission network.

Notice the term 'energy supplier' is sort of not really discussed?
Is it possible 'energy suppliers' don't really supply anything?

Re: Difference between network operators and energy suppliers
there seems to be very little discussion about domestic agreements? All is geared to commercial contracts/agreements?
https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/information-consumers/energy-advice-businesses/types-business-energy-contracts
try the term 'energy broker' in the search bar & I got this, mostly all towards commercial activity.

Re: Difference between network operators and energy suppliers
I had a diagram showing the relationship between the parties, but I can't find it now. Essentially to create the effect of a competitive marker, customers pay their chosen supplier based on their meter readings, and the Supplier enters into contracts with producers to buy a matching amount of energy. Of course that's a simplification because meter readings are only obtained at intervals whereas the grid has to stay in balance on a sub-second basis. There's a reasonably full explanation of how it all works here ..LionsShare wrote:Notice the term 'energy supplier' is sort of not really discussed?

By the way and since there is some misinformation floating around (not origination on this site) suggesting that by fitting a meter you can become a supplier in your own right, here is some information on the process and requirements for obtaining a supplier's licence ..

Re: Difference between network operators and energy suppliers
there was some info posted I had seen where ofgem it was stated to the effect people can have thier own meters in but will become responsible for the up keep & maintenance of such.
I'll try to find the info again.

Re: Difference between network operators and energy suppliers
I've not seen that from Ofgem, but it's correct and stated in the Electricity Act 1989 (as amended). In my opinion they would have been better making the meter the DNO's responsibility. The reality is that suppliers just take over the meter that was already in place, for example where I'm living now as far as I can tell has had at least 10 suppliers (one of them twice) but still the same meter.
Anyway to get back to how it is, this is what the Act says, but it would also be subject to technical requirements, for example DNO approval to de-energise during the work, or competence to work live.

Schedule 7 wrote:(2)If the authorised supplier agrees, the meter may be provided by the customer (who may provide a meter which belongs to him or is made available otherwise than in pursuance of arrangements made by the supplier); but otherwise it shall be provided by the authorised supplier (who may provide a meter which belongs to him or to any person other than the customer).
(2A)An authorised supplier may refuse to allow one of his customers to provide a meter only if there are reasonable grounds for his refusal.
