When someone pays you with a check, you’ll usually have to sign the back of it before you can deposit it in your account. Signing the back of it is called “endorsing the check.” What you write when you sign it—how you endorse the check—depends upon what you want to do with the check and how the check is written. Endorsing a check allows your bank and you or a third-party to settle the funds associated with the check.

Can you endorse a modern cheque? I think they're all pre-printed as "crossed" nowadays. In the UK we used to endorse them (if not crossed) if they were to be paid to someone else, not if paying into the original payee's account.

TBH I have not written out my own cheque for years. I know it does say AC Payee on my cheque book that I still have.

When it comes to utilities I have endorsed some of those I have received - sign & date on the back of the actual "cheque", just to see what happened.

To answer your question I do not see why not? Or put another way if you make up your mind to do it, again why not?
