Lets be clear here, Ammonium Nitrate is used in two main ways, either as a fertilizer or as one of the two main components of commercial explosives called ANFO which stands for Ammonium Nitrate fuel oil.

As its name suggests ANFO comprises two components which are ammonium nitrate and fuel oil which is diesel by another name, and these come as two main types, solid form in sticks of explosive or liquid form in which the two components are mixed together to form a blast bomb. Solid types were made using anhydrous (totally dry) ammonium nitrate and adding diesel to it and the anhydrous nature of the ammonium nitrate absorbed the diesel and this solid form was rolled into sticks and wrapped in waxed paper; the largest users were the coal mining industry who used tonnes of the stuff underground.

Liquid forms usually come in a tanker of half ammonium nitrate and half diesel, each discharge valve had a chute covering it and when both valves were opened both the ammonium nitrate and diesel fell into the chute and mixed together as they discharged into a drilled hole. Its main uses in liquid form is in outcrop coal sites and quarries where they drill a series of holes in specific patterns and as it exits the mixing chute it discharges into these holes and is capped with clay or similar where it is left overnight to mix.

Dry types are ignited with an electric detonator as it creates a miniature impulse explosion which ignites the explosive, in wet types they use a booster cap as wet types are harder to ignite, booster caps are merely plastic balls fitted with a more powerful explosive than ANFO, plastic explosive being very common, and you insert a detonator into the booster cap and insert this into the hole filled with wet explosive.

Its only the addition of fuel oil which turns it from an inert substance into a bomb, so who added fuel oil and how did it get there?
How was this detonated as a wet explosive as an electric detonator wouldn't do it and a small quantity of a more powerful explosive would be needed to ignite it.
