Water Bill Empty Water Bill

Post by whitehawk Mon Aug 24, 2020 10:54 am

Hi all, new here.

Not at all got my head around everything!

So I owned a house, I have just completed the sale. Since December I have been living in rented in another part of the country. I cancelled the water bill since I was not using any water.

Anyway before I completed the sale I picked up some post.

Water bill was sent to the occupier - great.

Just been to pick up the post again and water bill is now address to my wife who was also named on the previous bills.

The buyer of our house moves in on Friday and I imagine she will be calling the water company to say she just moved in.

What do you suggest I do. The wife just had our post redirected.

Thanks all

Afternoon, ultimatly you will be held liable for the water at your previous address prior to the new.... moving in, so you could try a game of cat & mouse if you wish but it will catch you sooner or later. You could fess up & face what ever comes your way, but having the bill to "the occupier" is not really the best position to be in, although it can be dealt with in that way, get the bill in your name 1st - if you wish.

As it is to your wife, could she not process (pay it) for you? What I am on about is settling the liability & remain in honor. This is important, if you hold title to your new place, these parasites are now going after property for non payment of a non existent debt so becareful.

Non existent debt takes some explaining, I will do it if you want, but it is really a leap of faith because it will challenge what you have been taught or lead to believe all your life.

There is more in the utilities section of this site to read if you want.

https://goodf.forumotion.com/f42-utilities

You can do any of the following:

1. Pay with cash, direct debit, cheque, to get rid in 1 go.
2. Pay by endorsement - see utilities section above, to get rid in 1 go. Risky, takes balls & understanding, possibility of court action against you.
3. Set up a payment plan (probably the best if you cannot afford to pay in 1 go).

https://goodf.forumotion.com/t3622-down-memory-lane
Is a good place to start if you want to research No.2 further.

Hi Lionshare, thanks for the reply... are you suggesting that I just pay it? I have tried endorsement before to no avail Sad

I haven't been living there so why do I have to pay for water?

whitehawk: have a good look at the tear off slip on the bill you have, under the thick black box with the amount expected in, does it say 'cheque acceptable/not acceptable at post office counter'?

OK if you do not want to pay by endorse then it will have to be cleared somehow.

What I suggest if the house has been in your name but you have not lived there then you will need to get in touch with water Co & state what it is that you are contesting. Remember its whoever lives at an address at anyone time is responsible for all utliltiy bills. If you rented out your house whilst you were renting somewhere else you would have to get water Co to get in touch with whomever rented off you for water Company to get thier payment.

The reason you may be getting a bill if you rented somewhere else is because you would be the 'landlord' whilst renting elsewhere. Its the name on the deeds that gets you the bill.

From your last post:
as you have that wording then I take it the word 'cheque'  is written as well, its a cheque made payble to the Mr., Mrs., person name, but as you do not want to pay by endorsement then you will need to come to some other arrangement to pay, even if it means the house was empty & your name is on the deeds you will get a bill. Sad

whitehawk: there are arrangements with different water companies when porperties are empty, get in touch with your water company & find out what they are you may get a very reduced bill.

Yes because you have an obligation to discharge a public liability.

It will come down who actually has that debt for the given time period of ????, it may well be not your debt. As there is an imbalance in the public accounting, it will have to be remedied.

DI I like it, I like it.

Totally AGREE with what Ceylon states regarding 'to the occupier'. I have ALWAYS engaged at every stage because THEY will cut you off legally.

I do still give honorable discharge through bills of exchange because I have deeds to my property & there has been others that have had property stolen- yes stolen - for a srtictly speaking non existant debt. Very Happy

But you the reader must do what is correct for you.
