Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
Its 26/02/2021 and a full moon today! So its a good time to get some veg seeds germinating.
This experiment is to compare the growth and habits of 3 sets of seed through germination and growth. Each set is made up of Carrots,Courgettes and Cherry tomato seeds.
The seeds were placed in small ziplock bags
The bags were placed on their pole arranged along the EDGE of the magnet
And taped in place
Set 1 has been exposed to the south pole of a strong neodymium magnet for 12 hours prior to germination.
Set 2 has been exposed to the north pole of a strong neodymium magnet for 12 hours prior to germination.
Set 3 has NOT been exposed to the either pole and kept away from the magnet.
After 12 hours exposure the seeds were sown into potting compost/perlite mix into similar containers. The soil and containers were given approximately the same amount of water via spray bottle.
Day 1 (Courgettes)
The experiment will take place indoors under a 100 watt horticultural led light.
More pics to follow as I update. I shall be taking photos when something happens rather than on any schedule.

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
Maybe also try watering with the same polarity water through the duration of the experiment?
just put north facing magnet towards the north water jug etc and only use that for watering them

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
but then i wont know if it is the exposure to the magnet or the water that is the cause of any effects, the watering will be the same for all, i wont be using restructured water , although that could be done. This is to see any differences noticeable from 12 hours exposure of the seed only !
I will do a thread about water restructuring with magnets. It does work but you need a huge magnet, not those gimmicky ones sold for that task!

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
yes I use 2 Neodymium Magnets (40 x 20mm) for restructuring water, works great!
When i plant seeds i put them in my mouth so they get a coating of my saliva it is supposed to convey information to the seed so when you eat the harvest it will heal what ails you.

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
Someone once told me that when taking cuttings to rub the cut stem on your palm because it benefits rooting. Which i have always done when ever I take cuttings, the persons theory was that there were growth hormones in your sweat. I have not found any scientific evidence to back up the hormone claim but i do know that it benefits the plant. So perhaps it is the water in our sweat that is the key.
Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
Here is an overview of the experiment..
Carrots were sown into small trays , 2 rows in each tray so there are 3 trays of carrots.
Courgettes were sown into individual pots because the seeds are much larger, there are 9 pots, 3 in each set.
Tomatoes were sown in 1 container per set so there are 3 containers which each contain multiple seeds. The 3 Toms are in the front row in the photo.
Colour coded green=courgettes,orange=carrots and red=tomatoes!
Last night at some point the first of the seeds sprouted! So that would be late on in day 7.The temperature has been around 18/19 deg C constantly with the light off. Now the light will be on a timer for 16 hours light per day and the temp goes up to around 24 deg c with the light on.
We have 2 sets with emerging sproutlings , all are tomatoes. One can be seen in the South exposed
0 can be seen in the North exposed.
2 can be seen in the Not exposed
I can also see some activity in the courgettes too, the soil is starting to bulge and break on the tops of many containers in all sets. It is more noticeable in the south and not exposed sets .
Nothing out of the ordinary yet!
It is worthy to note that the soil depth above the seeds will be a variable although i tried to keep everything the same there will be some discrepancy. So the exact time of sprouting could be slightly affected in the results by the distance they have to grow through soil to break the surface.

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
Day 8 21:15
approx 18 hours since last photos.
South exposed now has 10 emerging
North exposed has 3 emerging
Not exposed has 5 emerging
The exact numbers of seeds in each container will vary in the tomatoes and carrots groups. I will be selecting the best 3 tomatoes and potting them up individually , the rest will go to good use elsewhere where i have more room and outside eventually. The carrots will need thinning to approximately the same numbers , but will be left in these small tray containers for the whole experiment and what happens, happens !
The courgettes will be monitored and possibly potted up into slightly larger pots .
We can see the green tips coming through ,most noticeably in the not exposed and south exposed sets.
I have no idea how big they will get with just 100watts light ,it isn't much for a full seed to fruit grow with so many plants. Will have to play it by eye. The light is rated for 2 foot square but the space i have is larger. This light is only intended for starting seedlings indoors for the first few weeks.

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
Right now iam seriously thinking i may have mixed the courgettes south and not exposed sets! so i may need to re do the courgettes for confirmation, but i will let it go for now!

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
one thing that stands out is the courgettes North exposed group which haven't managed to shed the seed shell when all the others lost them under the soil. This is something ive noticed with old seeds , they tend to do this alot , and to me is a sign of lessened vigour. These seeds were all from this years stock and from the same packet! A definite observable trend in the North group.
In the South exposed group we have what appears to be an "odd" example which is very yellow looking seedling. Since it is very different from the rest of its group i want to rule out that this is any effect from the magnetic exposure and is more likely to be just an unhealthy seed. To me the other two in the south group are the most vibrant green and shiny of all. This also applies to the whole south exposed set with slightly more development slightly better colour , although it is very close to the not exposed set. The poorest development does seem to be in the north exposed set!

Do you actually break sweat Lopsum? my early tomatoes are already up in the poly tunnel and first crop should be fruiting in May.
Onions looking well also.

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
A bit of yellowing going on , the courgettes are ready to be potted up.
Also i noticed flowers starting to appear on the courgettes!!! Yes 16 hours of light is summertime so we have missed out the grow season and gone straight into flower! This should be interesting! Micro fruits?
south showing roots
Not is showing roots
North no roots showing yet!
Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
The south carrots have continued to be dry and needed manual watering, The Not and North carrots have developed nicely and are looking better than the south most probably due to the extra wetness .

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
Well alot has changed , I had to move out of the cupboard after potting up things went on a spurt and quickly needed more room.
The carrots were all transplanted as they came out of the trays in blocks and placed in one outdoor flower pot and have been outside happily in our prolonged cold.
Toady we harvested the 3 trays and took pics also did a taste test! (update to come later!)
The courgettes and tomatoes were moved onto a window sill and the light was also applied. The courgettes flowered several times but without bees and insects there will be no pollination so we ate the flowers.
Things got a bit unorganised and we have lost track of which plant is from which group so the experiment is over and conclusions can be drawn.(although i will follow them to their ends and try to guess by taste , should any survive the move to outside)
Thanks to the carrots we have gone from seed to harvest in a little under 90 days/3 months and we have something to taste!

Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
The south on the left , not in the middle , north right side.
My daughter helped harvest and taste test, first we pulled the South carrots!
Then the Not's!
And the North's
Generally impressed with the results although they are extremely small (as expected) some are fully formed little carrots! Both the exposes groups seemed to do better than the not exposed set. This could be due to being in the middle and so got less light perhaps.
Re: Magnetic seed exposure experiment.
Then the best of each set
South, Not, North
We washed and ate the best ones and our results were the same...
SOUTH (sweet intense carrot flavour ,crunchy, juicy, very little bitterness in aftertaste and the flavour lasted)
NOT (not as sweet but still v nice, a little bitter aftertaste, flavour didnt last as long, not as crunchy a bit watery)
NORTH (nice to start but went bitter and the after taste was very bitter, not as crunchy and more watery, flavour of carrot gone in seconds bitterness lasted.)
South pole wins hands down in the taste test , I could have eaten a whole plate full of south, not so with any of the others. Really a huge difference. With the north i wouldnt want to eat more than one.
