DWP demanding payment

I'm looking for some guidance please.
Approximately 2 weeks ago I received a letter from the DWP stating they are after £1543.22 with no explanation as to why or how i owe it, having tried to contact them with no luck and having done some internet searched I feared it may be a scam and left it.
Last Friday 17th I received another letter again with no explanation how I owe them this amount they are taking it from my wage (direct earnings attachment). I again attempted to contact them with no luck.
I spoke to my payroll who also received a letter, I explained that I think it may be a scam and asked them not to pay or delay payment, they told me they can't as they would then be liable.

Where do I start or is it too late?

First thing ALL contact must be via Royal Mail, you need written evidence
of everything, (this applies to everything not just this issue).
Write and tell them you require a full breakdown .
Also put in your letter that this is a Subject Data Access Request,in which
you require all the data they hold on you including but not limited to;
emails internal & external ,notes ,letters ,telephone recordings and all Data
relating to you.
Also reply to the name who originally is making the claim.You will no doubt get
a response from a different person every time ,but always address to the original
claimant.
They have been pulling this stunt for a long time & its believed staff are incentified by results.
If you have made no mistakes on your original application and have informed them
in a timely manner of any changes .then any mistake will be on their part
and you hve no obligation to pay.
Hope you have kept records of everything. ( if not its a lesson for the future)
