It's common knowledge that many suppliers are grossly incompetent in their billing, and in setting DD values as well.
But that's nothing to do with smart meters, which simply record consumption. They don't generate bills, and can't be "programmed to overcharge". That's simply not how the system works.

True meters don't generate bills, some people have provided meter readings which are way off what an average usage would be for a particular home, such as 'recording' usage that the 'supplier' generates a bill of say several £1000's for 1 month.flyingfish wrote:But that's nothing to do with smart meters, which simply record consumption. I don't know if that's due to some 're-programming' via so called SMART techology or some incorrect setting perhaps during manufacture?
The meters are not the 'system' but its how some do work.

I've actually never heard of a case where a smart meter recorded over estimates. There were cases with conventional gas meters where say an imperial meter was billed as if it was metric, or vice versa.
There plenty of cases of suppliers using higher than reasonable estimates, or sometimes as disputing customer reads if those prove a lower use than the suppliers estimates. Or occasional crossed meters. These get sorted out, eventually, but some suppliers are shockingly poor at doing so.
But none of these are specific smart meter issues.
Skimming that web link quickly it seems to be mainly a digest of every smart meter conspiracy theory. It only takes a few seconds to find things that are blatantly incorrect, for example the comments about RF and ground reference. Or the claimed 2.75kWh per day.

If you are in debt they reprogramme the tariff, or so they claim, and they can also be programmed to overcharge and apparently they are and this is allegedly done on roundings so little and often; a local gas engineer fitted a conventional meter past his smart meter to make a comparison and the diffeence, the smart meter was over reading by around 5% in one month.
This is only one case which I know of with actual evidence.

You may be thinking of pre-payment meters where a debt can be "loaded" on and a proportion of each prepayment actually goes against the debt rather than crediting the account. Aside from that the tariff in a smart meter is purely for information and is not used for billing. On a conventional tariff rounding won't be a factor as billing is done from the index rather than by adding up all the 1/2 slots. An individual bill could be rounded up (or down) to the nearest 0.1kWh, but that doesn't have a cumulative effect. If you are on a TOU tariff then potentially you could be affected by rounding errors, that's just one factor to consider when choosing.and they can also be programmed to overcharge and apparently they are and this is allegedly done on roundings

Conventional prepayment meters are the only sort that actually use the tariff. In all other cases the meter is just used to measure usage and report to the supplier, either by manual reading or via DCC if it's a smart meter. In either case it reports the metered units, not cost.
