Britain is fast becoming a cashless society. In the wake of the Covid pandemic, more and more shops, cafes and pubs are choosing to only accept card payments. And with the rise of Apple and Google Pay, vulnerable people who rely on cash are increasingly being left behind by the relentless march of technology.

More than five million adults still rely on cash in the UK and it’s used in six billion transactions every year, but there are strong vested interests pushing for it to be permanently replaced by debit and credit cards and other electronic payments. These cost you more in the long-run and enable 3rd parties to track you and your spending.

I call on the Government to introduce legislation to protect the status of cash as legal tender and as a widely accepted means of payment in the UK until at least 2050.

They will never kill cash, despite their best efforts as around 10% of people do not have a bank account and many do not want one and with banks closing so many accounts down, this number will increase; if something selling life essentials such as food, groceries, medicines or anything vital to life it will be discrimination. Think of the Turkish barbers which are the new fad and try paying in anything other than cash.

It is all about control and nothing more as HMRC want to what you are spending and where it is being spent, start spending a lot of cash and you must be a drug dealer and be reported to the po-lice, or you seemingly spend more than your benefits and the DWP will be notified, get the picture. It is also about not carrying cash, why? because the shops are not a target and get cheaper insurance and have to spend less on EPOS systems and safes to store cash.
