Hi All
Not sure if this is the right section, but I hope it helps. We all (or at least the vast majority of us) have received letters from DCAs, financial institutions, and other creditors, which are outright threatening in tone. We are all very aware that these can be extremely stress-inducing too. Here is a petition to ask these people to be a bit kinder in the tone of their letters https://www.moneyandmentalhealth.org/debt-threats/. It would be great if you could sign it.

It’s a great idea and I’ll sign it, but trust me nothing will change. Until if / when the government steps in (ie it becomes a legal requirement). So don’t hold your breath sadly Sad

Sadly, I think you may be right. Anything that draws attention to the issue can't hurt though. The best way I have found was to be aggressive back to them and make it clear you aren't intimidated, they tend to back off then.

Totally agree with you Davey! Yep, I tweak the templates to turn the screw one them, including given them only 10 days each time etc, just like the scum bags do to me...

Letters which are threatening are unconscionable, they are intimidating and are acts of bullying.

Check out your local consumer protection laws to see what they say about this- kind of activity. In nearly all jurisdictions this kind of behavior is illegal and those who engage in it subject to severe penalties.

You need to know enough about the consumer laws in your jurisdiction to be able to push back on these activities. All this takes is reading or have a document on hand.

We can push back by quoting the relevant Sections of the relevant Act and reminding them of the penalties they face. Also, the debt collection industry in most jurisdictions have a regulator whose job is to regulate the behavior of debt collectors. They will be able to point you to appropriate documentation for reporting unethical behavior. Do not hesitate to lodge a complaint to the regulator about the DC's behavior.

Providing examples of unethical behavior is strong action and is an appropriate way to respond to bullying and intimidation by DC's.

Stop The Debt Threat Letters Empty Re: Stop The Debt Threat Letters

Total waste of time, look at who is doing it? its a research group and this is about research and obtaining your personal date which has a financial value and can be sold by them at any time, it will also conclude that most of the respondents will have mental health issues and this is useful information for certain groups looking to curtail our freedoms.

Look at their ambitions carefully, what are they hoping to achieve? actually very little and it at best will be little more than a PR stunt which will give the Government credibility for doing virtually nothing, their stated objective is to simply change the wording of these letters from a threatening and intimidating letter to a less intimidating letter. Will it stop letters going out, will it stop people from being threatened, and will it stop people from being harassed NO, will it stop people being taken to the faux courts, will it stop the large number of warrants issued NO as this is a big money industry for these companies and the courts.

Sadly you’re true. The truth hurts, there’s no denying it. But all the more reason more people need to fight back using the template letters and advice on here to prove that these scum bags won’t have it all their way. They are not above the law and the template letters etc keep them ‘honest’ so to speak.
