Planting Garlic In Containers

Planting garlic in containers in a controlled (heat/light) indoor/greenhouse environment.

Step 1, Get your garlic prepared, for this I have used cheap shop brought garlic, you can replicate this with any garlic you can source (organic etc). Remove the outer coating and carefully split the garlic into the individual pieces.



Step 2, Get your containers ready that you would like to use, any container will do but it at-least needs to have a good depth of about 5 inches. Depending on how many you are going to plant in each container I try to give them about 2 inches space between each bulb, however once the frost passes then these will be going into raised beds with about 4/5 inches spacing. This is not a strict requirement but if you chose to grow them in the containers then they may not be as large when you come to harvest.



Step 3, Fill the containers with sieved soil (See here for how I sieve the soil I use := https://goodf.forumotion.com/t1896-planting-onions-radish-tomatoes).



Step 4, Drill holes in the soil about 1.5 inches deep (about half a thumb if we are being technical) and place the previously prepared individual garlic bulbs into the holes, make sure the pointy bit is facing up as this is where the garlic will sprout from.





Step 5, Cover the holes over and give the soil a good soaking (preferably with harvested rainwater, if it is tap water then let it stand for 12 hours to vent of the chemicals that are added).





Step 6, Place the containers in your indoor heated location of choice, For larger pots/containers I use a grow tent that is climate controlled using a plug that has a temperature sensor on it that turns a 450 watt oil radiator on to keep the temp at a cosy 18c. As this is a closed environment I also use two fan's that both suck air in and pull air out on a timer cycle. Set your lighting of choice (led etc)on a 12 hour timer, I use 55k LED's for sprouting.

i had my turmeric plant in the window and under a timed energysaving cfl bulb over winter this year and it kept the plant ticking over till the end of january when the leaves finally died off. Thats an extra 3 months or more of green leaves ! It needed way more light to be of any use though . Theory works !
