can DCA do a credit search

Hi,

I wonder if DCA can do a credit search at any point and whenever they want to check somebody's financial situation?

Anyone can do a credit search and anyone undertaking financial transactions usually has an account with one or more of the agencies, normal individuals can also undertake them for a fee.

I have googled it but some sources say that it a hard search and some that' s a soft search. I wonder which one it could be and how often as hard search can be quite devastating for credit score (46 points down per search).

I’m not sure, apologies. May I ask why you’re asking? What is your ultimate concern?

For the core people here, we are not concerned with credit scores, that is not our aim. We do not want our lives ‘ruled’ by some BS system that, in effect, socially profiles us which is arguably a human rights issue when you think about it. People get into debt for all sorts of reasons. Legitimate ones (hard times - and the banks and debt companies exploit this...) and illegitimate ones (divulging in materialistic - ie meaningless - gratification). In both cases, your score would be low. So you’re ‘tarnished’ with the same brush ie you’re untrustworthy etc. Is that just and fair? No...

My score is very poor but I don’t care. I have no credit cards nor need for them. I live on my earnings and savings and I have managed just fine for many years now, ever since I set out on the GOODF journey.

The idea is to GOODF and then STAY out of debt and never again have a dependency on loans or credit cards. The idea is not to blindly download templates and use them but to read and digest them and therefore understand WHY we use them ie they are JUST and FAIR questions (that we ask of banks, debt purchasers and debt collections agencies.)

We never say “we will not pay back an alleged debt.” In effect*, we say “we are happy to pay whatever we may owe so long as you evidence that there is such a debt.”

*Read the template letters and keep reading them until you see the meaning in them and the justice in them Smile

I would just like to reiterate what Mr Blue stated. The aim of this site is to
help folks get out of debt .I for one would not be happy helping someone
to get rid of a debt so they can then jump back in and create another one.
For some reason many people believe their credit score is an important part
of their life. I do not know what my score is ,I have never looked and have no
interest in it.
I know of one effective site that will not help to get rid of a debt if the intention
is to do it in order to take on another.

Sorry folks, I do not want to mess up here. The reason why I was asking is that I was thinking about repairing my credit score to be able to buy a home in the future. I had a very difficult time in the past, had to give up work due to the severe disability of my child and got serious financial problems. The house where we live now is not ours, the place is not the best for children, especially for those with a disability. I am on council list for a couple of years but unfortunately no luck on this field. The last thing I am thinking is another credit card but we are in a situation where buying a home on a shared equality scheme could be a better option rather than waiting for a council offer or stay in the place where we are now.

Sorry to hear about difficult circumstances. In terms of building your credit score, that’s not something I can help with, apologies. Except to say pay off all of your loans and credit cards I guess. Maybe someone else might help you here.

A soft search is a common term used for a basic search and this would often be a retailer offering you a store card as an example, and they would only look for your basic history to allow you to have their store card.

Hard searches go more in depth and to some extent it is defined by value, if you had a household brand name store card with a credit limit of £250 for example this may only require a soft search and as other store cards may offer you a store card with £1500 worth of credit they would do a hard search.
Where a larger debt may be incurred such as a large bank loan or a mortgage the hard search determines several things and the most common would be your interest rate as the riskier you are, the more money they wan't back quickly and if you default they still have your property to recover.

If you sign up for one of the free credit check things you can see who's been searching. For example I need to do the car insurance so I've been looking at quotes. On "Credit Karma" I can see a bunch of soft searches as a result.
