Vet bill Empty Vet bill

Post by Cookiemonster2 Mon May 18, 2020 1:44 pm

I've been paying a vet monthly but due to corona and my income gone skew if, i asked them for a freeze and last month the Vet said no as I should get 80% then I responded in email that I am selfemployed. They emailed me today to say they sending it over to debt collection agency as I have not contact them and refuse to pay.

Where to go from here?

Ok ,so you have received a service so its only right that you honour your part
of the contract. However that said ,as you are unable to meet present payments,
only pay what you can realisticly afford and inform them as such.
Therefor you are not refusing to pay and you stay in hounour. There is nothing
a debt collector can do. If it should go to small claims court ( which I think is very
unlikely ) the judge will not order you to pay more than you can afford anyway.
Its important that you pay something no matter how small.

Agree with Dave, but as Government assistance has only become available in the last couple of days for the self employed, I doubt any court would issue anything, they cannot make you pay what you cannot afford anyway. You should be able to get a payment holiday from most payments so perhaps this is an avenue to consider.

What would I do? I would write to them (no telephone or e-mails) and clearly state that they have provided a sevice and you accept you have to pay for it, and clearly explain that you are self employed and have received no income for many weeks and cannot afford to pay them at this time and you are waiting for your claim as a self employed peson to be processed by the DWP, but you have other outstanding priority payments.

Clearly state that you intend paying them when finances permit and that at no point have you options as you simply cannot afford it, and that as a gesture of good will you will pay £1 per month to show good faith and when finances permit, you will resume your payments; but why?

If this is taken further you have this letter as proof of your commitment to pay, and you have shown good faith by trying to work with them to deal with this matter in an amicable manner; its your evidence as Private Record of the Parties.

Also remember to sign the letter and copy the signed letter, do not print two copies of the letter and sign one as any documentation you send must be a true copy of the original.
