Would a small claim be worth while

Ok back in 2020 i paid a fee to a ground rent company in febuary, I herd nothing until a random refund turned up in my bank account.I was later told i had not included a reference number and the fee was risen too over £2500. they kept my money for over 5 months then gave me it back to charge me more on a technicality. Anyone got any thoughts

I would try the route of 'I made payment which you returned'
therefore payment was made.
Even if you missed the ref no the payment would still have your
name attached somewhere,so they could have contacted you much
sooner.
You could ask them is this an attempt at unjust enrichment ?

Thanks for the comment i appreciate it, herd from them they claim they wrote me letters( I very much doubt that) but thats what i think they will go with. Wondering if i can claim interest on them keeping hold of my cash at least.

So they claim to not know who you are and keep your money for months and cite the reason as not knowing who you are, then try to claim they have written to you while claiming they didn't know who you are, contradicts itself and I would certainly be brewing up an affidavit.
