Prepping 3 Security

Prepping 3 Security Empty Prepping 3 Security

Post by assassin Fri Sep 06, 2024 4:21 am

Security is the next issue and one which needs taking very seriously as in such times people will see everything so the first thing to do is close your curtains before turning any light on so they cannot see in and have lighter or summer curtains and not the very heavy curtains which block out the light so people can see the light through the curtains and assume you are in without seeing to your home.

Sensor security lights come in 12 volts and even solar or rechargeable battery powered and are an ideal basic security precaution and they come in many guises and the American yard light which fires a beam to a receiver is an excellent first step as many are solar and need nothing, so fit and forget until the house receiver rings or beeps to alert you of a potential intruder.

!2 volt versions of the traditional security light you screw to your house also exist along with solar versions and they are certainly worthwhile, particularly at the rear or secluded areas of your property.

Tactical torches are a security essential as they can be zoomed in and out to light up wide, short distances or very narrow and long distances so are really the best all round security torch and many come with the 18650 lithium battery and a dry battery holder so you can still use the torch while you are recharging your lithium cell.

One thing not mentioned yet is outside work at night or after dark which may include going to a generator to start it or going to collect logs from a log store or just going to a garage or workshop to repair something as this is where the LED lighting strip and home made lighting comes in and we can introduce the remote control and lighting in, or outside a specific area. Most people will be familiar with remote control for things such as remote control light switches or car alarms and these are 12 volts and switch a car alarm on or off, so why not use and enhance the same basic system, oh yes they have and they are readily and cheaply available.
How do they work? They work in exactly the same way as your car alarm in that you press a button to switch them on and off and they come as the transmitter which you carry and the receiver which is connected to a 12 volt battery and draws power from it to work, the other side goes out to your appliance which requires switching and it turns it on or off. Newer variants have a standard transmitter and a longer range transmitter which work up to 100 metres away and yes they do work which means you can switch an outside bought, or home made light on outside, or multiple lights if they are all connected to the output side of the receiver and if you have them outside your door and concealed it will potentially catch burglars out. What it does mean is that before you even go out to a garage, shed, or workshop at night you can illuminate the area first or if you have a hidden spot on your garden you can illuminate this and stop potential burglars hiding there. You don’t have to switch just lighting as you can fire a 12 volt wailer or alarm, switch on lighting inside any shed, garage, or workshop or anywhere you like within the remote controls range and even have outside lighting you can switch on from your car or other vehicle, even before you get out.

LED light strip usually comes as standard non waterproof and fully waterproof which for me is a bit of a misnomer as the lighting strip itself may be waterproof, but what about the solder terminals as they are not, and exposed, so I suggest coating them with lacquer or mounting inside a waterproof housing.

One of the simplest security measures are the cheap outdoor solar lights which come as either a string or a net; how many of you watch the ghost hunting programmes on TV and see them use their SLS or structured light sensor cameras which fire a grid of red dots and if a ghost passes they can see the outline, this is exactly the same. Set your lights in a set of random light pattern and on a dark night you will see anyone walking past them if they are away from your house and if you have something such as a patio you can cover the foliage with them or you can fix them to the inside of a front wall and the process is the same, you will see anyone passing them, especially if your eyes are not the best.
