Hi guys I need some help a hobby of mine is flying radio controlled model aeroplanes and have been flying them for thirty years,in the past couple of years the BBC and uk government has attacked our hobby by way of haveing to REGISTER our model planes with the CAA Civil Avation Authority for £9 pounds and end up on the CAA data base, you also get a flyer ID registration number to stick on your models just like a car number plate, there is a organisation in the uk called the BMFA british model flying association where I get my model insurance through them just to be safe you never know,so I renewed my insurance with the bmfa I was asked if I would like to register my models with the caa I clearly stated I do not concent to registration, the woman on the phone replyed but sir its only £9 pounds again I clearly stated no I do not concent,i tried to explane to her about registration, but she is a brain dead sheep,so I paid for my insurance and that was that,a week later I get my insurance through along with CAA registration details and a flyer id registration number,i am bouncing furious the woman on the phone registered me with the CAA and now I'm on the dam CAA data base, guys how the hell do or can I get off the CAA data base is there a way or is that it for ever..many thanks in advance..

Only you can register something as the word regis means to give away deed of title, or legal ownership.

If she registered something of yours without consent she is committing a criminal offence of theft and this is a tort under common law. Write to them and deregister and do this in the form of an affidavit.

The BMFA was in extended negotiation during the consultation leading up to this new legislation. One of the things that was conceded was the ability for them to register their members on their behalf. However I don't know if that was mandatory, ie they are required to register all their members. It wouldn't make sense for it to be that way, as models below 250g are exempt.

Incidentally it's not actually the models that are registered, it is what the CAA calls the "Operator", being the person responsible.  As you've probably guessed this came about because of idiots with drones, so the idea of the sticker on the model is that they can trace the owner if he's scarpered.

The person operating the model is termed a "Flyer" and is supposed to pass a test and hold a certificate.  Possibly BMFA members may be exempt from this requirement, or maybe exempt if they hold a BMFA rating.

It's typical government overkill, they could have brought in something specific for drones with a little thought.  However as it stands even model aircraft without a camera are included, and even gliders.  However I suppose we should compare this with the US where they are proposing each model have it's own digital ID broadcasting it's position at all times.

They did bring in something for drones, they all have to be registered and they include the documents in with the drone. Many people pay by card and this transaction can be traced back to the card holder to get their name and address but the problem is paying with cash as they have no records to trace back.

As I said it's the "Operator" that needs to be registered not the model, the Operator registration covers any number of models. Registering direct with the CAA starts with your email address which is then validated, I very much doubt that the process could be completed without providing reasonably full personal and address information, although I don't know how thoroughly hat is checked.  I can't see how paying cash would help even if it's possible.

Be aware that the laws changed at the end of last year, among other things restricting the exemption for under 250g models.  It is complex, more akin to the sort of regulation applying to real aircraft, and unfortunately the penalties are also comparable, not at all like a road traffic or parking allegation.

CAP1974 although aimed at enforcement agencies gives a good walkthrough including references to the actual bits of legislation ..
